YOUTH HALL RENOVATION

HALL REFURBISHMENT

The last week in July saw members of the Cup Cake Crew up to their elbows in sanding discs and paint as they started the refurbishment of the youth hall.

Hopefully most of you have had a chance to see what an excellent job they have done.  We would like to say how proud we are of all of them. In a time when we hear continuous reports of the problems caused by the youth of today, it brings into perspective how lucky we are to see a group of teenagers willing to give up so much time and effort towards something positive. Thank you very much to Heidi James Lawrence, Kate Longbottom, Vicky Wilcox, Elyse Richards, Emma Richards, Rebecca Batty and Jess Hall for all your efforts. Apart from painting till they dropped,  Emma blinged the benches, whilst Kate wielded a mean sander, Elyse ran the whole operation with morning meetings which were clear and authoritive, a mean wielder of  the white board.

Obviously the week was the culmination of months of planning and meetings, the briefing to the Property Committee being just one the challenges the girls had to meet.  We can report the work was completed on time and just as importantly on Budget, with the girls fund Raising effort they were able to fund the project themselves.

This has meant that the the church be able to purchase new chairs which will be a nice finishing touch.

We would also like to thank the following volunteers who helped in various capacities.

Peter Batty for providing the Health and Safety Training, Materials, etc.  The odd surprise inspections definitely kept us on our toes. Common Sense were our watchwords.  We all learnt something new and polished up existing knowledge we had. We are very pleased the work finished without any incidents. Thank you to Reginald Richards, who was our Health & Safety Advisor, on a day to day basis.

Karen and Ken Rufus who sanded and varnished with a vengeance.  Jenny Keightley, who came to help for a couple of hours! - and ended up staying for most of the day.  Sorry Tim.  Jenny has a particular wall which will always be known within the group as Jenny’s wall.  Margaret Ward, our master sander, for giving the girls a lovely place to hang their coats, and helping with the radiator painting.  Dorothy Hardman, dropped in with ice creams for everyone on Tuesday afternoon, which was a real pick me up for the girls, as some of them had been working for 4 days already by then.

Last but my no means not least Steve “THE LEDG !!!!!” Jones Steve, you came on Monday for the day, missed the Ice Creams on Tuesday, but, you were back on Wednesday and stuck with us till the end. You worked away in your eyrie, up on the scaffold, covering and uncovering the beams, and any other jobs that needed your attention.  The radiators are a credit to you.  It is no exaggeration to say that we really could not have done it without you.

A work force marches on its stomach - especially true of ours.  A special thanks to Michaela James Lawrence, who kept us fully fuelled all week. Making sure we had tea/coffee breaks on time, making endless bacon or Sausage sandwiches, which went down a treat.  We were kept stocked up with cakes most days, supplied by Norma Richards, who also helped Heidi to make the curtains.  When Michaela was not cooking, she was running errands, taking and collecting the doors to be dipped and lending a hand wherever and whenever it was needed.

The mural, on the hall wall has now been completed.  We would like to say a huge thank you to Peter Bourne who led our Arty Farty Party, “Muriel” and painting.  We are really pleased, as I am sure everyone will be at the outcome of his efforts.  Thank you so much Peter, it was really appreciated.  It also proved to the girls that you can do anything with the right encouragement.  A lesson we could all do to learn.   If you have not had a chance to see the Hall, then please make the effort and go and see it next time you are at Church.  It really is something everyone at Kingsfold should be proud of.

The only thing left to be done; is for each Uniformed/Church group to decide and decorate their “fruits”.  The Cup Cake Crew are hoping to hold a meeting in early September, to ask all groups what their preferences are.  We will hopefully have the tree completed for our Re-Dedication Service in October.
